Searching for CO2 laser in Ludhiana for acne scars, wrinkles, or skin resurfacing? You found the right page — but read this first. At The American Esthetics, we deliberately do not use CO2 laser for our Indian patients. Instead, we use the Erbium Glass 1550 fractional laser — which gives comparable results with significantly lower risk of post-treatment darkening (PIH), shorter downtime, and better safety on Type IV–V Indian skin.
This page explains why we made this clinical decision, what CO2 laser does, what Erbium 1550 does, and which one is genuinely right for Indian skin tones.

What Is CO2 Laser, and What Does It Treat?
CO2 laser (carbon dioxide laser, wavelength 10,600 nm) is one of the most aggressive laser resurfacing technologies in dermatology. It vaporises the top layers of skin to trigger dramatic collagen remodelling. Common uses:
- Acne scar treatment
- Deep wrinkles and fine lines
- Sun damage
- Stretch marks
- Surgical scar revision
- Pre-cancerous skin lesions (medical use)
For lighter skin tones (Type I–III), CO2 laser is often called the “gold standard” for resurfacing. For Indian skin (Type IV–V), the same aggressive depth that delivers results carries significantly higher risk.
Why CO2 Laser Is Risky on Indian Skin
Indian skin (Fitzpatrick Type IV–V) contains more melanin than lighter skin. When aggressive thermal energy hits melanin-rich skin, two things happen:
- Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) — the skin responds to deep thermal injury by producing extra melanin during healing, creating dark patches that can take 6 to 12 months to fade.
- Hypopigmentation (white patches) — in some cases, the opposite happens — melanocytes are damaged and the treated area heals lighter than surrounding skin. This is often permanent.
Most reputable Indian dermatologists now consider CO2 laser high-risk for Type IV–V skin unless used at very conservative settings — which sacrifices the dramatic results that justify CO2 laser in the first place.
Erbium Glass 1550 — The Smarter Choice for Indian Skin
Erbium Glass 1550 (also called Fraxel-style fractional non-ablative laser) is a different category — it heats the deep dermis through microscopic columns of treated tissue while leaving the surface layer intact. This triggers controlled healing and collagen remodelling without the aggressive surface vaporisation of CO2 laser.
The result for Indian patients:
- Comparable improvement in acne scars, wrinkles, and skin texture
- Significantly lower risk of post-treatment darkening (PIH)
- Shorter downtime: 2 to 4 days versus 7 to 14 days for CO2
- Safer for Type IV–V Indian skin
- Better suited to multi-session protocols that build results gradually

When CO2 Laser Might Still Be the Right Choice
To be balanced and honest: there are some cases where CO2 laser is still the better choice, even for Indian patients:
- Very deep boxcar or ice pick acne scars in patients with lighter skin tones
- Severe photoaging in lighter Type II–III skin
- Large pre-cancerous lesions (medical indication)
- Patients who can accept the longer downtime and PIH risk
For these specific cases, we refer to a specialist who uses CO2 laser. We do not perform CO2 ourselves — we focus on what we do best, which is safer technologies for Indian skin tones.

Frequently Asked Questions About CO2 Laser and Erbium 1550
Why don’t you offer CO2 laser at your clinic?
We made a clinical decision based on patient safety. The vast majority of our patients are Type IV–V Indian skin, and CO2 laser carries significantly higher risk of PIH and hypopigmentation on this skin tone. Erbium 1550 gives comparable end results with much lower risk and shorter downtime.
Is Erbium 1550 really as effective as CO2 laser?
For most acne scars and skin resurfacing in Indian patients, yes. Multiple peer-reviewed studies confirm comparable end results, with Erbium 1550 reaching the result over more sessions (4 to 6) versus CO2’s faster 1 to 3 sessions, but with much lower risk profile.
What if I really want CO2 laser?
We respect your choice. During consultation we will explain the risk-benefit honestly and refer you to a specialist who performs CO2 laser if you decide that is what you want.
How is the downtime different?
CO2 laser: 7 to 14 days of significant redness, swelling, scabbing, peeling. You cannot wear makeup, attend social events, or work. Erbium 1550: 2 to 4 days of mild redness similar to sunburn, then sandpaper texture for 5 to 7 more days that’s easily concealed with makeup.
Which is better for acne scars on Indian skin?
Erbium 1550 plus combined treatments (microneedling, PRP, GFC) give comparable acne scar improvement to CO2 laser, with significantly lower risk of pigmentation issues. See our dedicated acne scar treatment in Ludhiana page for full details.
Is Erbium 1550 the same as Fraxel?
Fraxel is a brand name. Erbium 1550 is the technology category. They share the same scientific principle — fractional non-ablative laser at 1550 nm. Brand differs; underlying mechanism is comparable.
What does Erbium 1550 treatment cost in Ludhiana?
Cost depends on the area treated, condition severity, and number of sessions. We offer single sessions and discounted packages. Honest quote during your free consultation.
Can I combine Erbium 1550 with other treatments?
Yes. Common combinations: Erbium 1550 + microneedling + PRP/GFC for acne scars, Erbium 1550 + carbon peel for skin texture refresh, Erbium 1550 + RF skin tightening for full anti-aging.
